Ensuring youth know their rights.
Wide Angle Youth Media + Disability Rights Maryland
Design Challenge
During the 2017-2018 school year over 40,000 young people were suspended in the state of Maryland. Of students suspended or expelled for the same type of infraction, Black students and students with disabilities are more likely to receive out-of-school suspension than white students or students without disabilities.
Design Response
In collaboration with Disability Rights Maryland, I worked with students at Wide Angle Youth Media to create wallet-sized Know Your Rights cards for youth explaining suspension rights. Each card shares tips for how to navigate the suspension process and advocate for yourself.
Since 2017, over 2,000 cards have been distributed to Baltimore students and the Know Your Rights series has grown to include Spanish translations and a card that explains student rights when interacting with police in schools.

“Students need to know their rights. When you get in those situations at school, a student should know what they are getting themselves into, and what their rights are as a human being.” - Katia Crawford, Youth Designer at Wide Angle Youth Media
